Guest Blogger, Shannon Steffens, with some tips on the all important and all confusing SEO!

First, I would like to thank Shannon for taking the time out of her busy schedule to write this post for us.  Shannon has a website on SEO.

Today I am going to talk about the importance of your web presence.  Having amazing images is not going to be enough to get your ranking up, in order to appear at the top of a Google or Yahoo Search your site also needs to have relevant content.  The way to achieve this is to work on your website’s Optimization or SEO.

The topic of SEO is HUGE.  There is a ton of information out on the web regarding this and at times the data will seem to be conflicting, when it comes to theories or ideas on how to accomplish effective SEO.  The goal I have with this series of articles is to educate you on the resources available, help to debunk a few “myths” and hopefully help you to develop your own strategy for SEO.

A common mistake many make with SEO is to think it’s is something you do once, and then you leave it alone. SEO is an evolving process.  SEO is something that must be constantly reevaluated to keep your site relevant and at the top of searches.

One of  the most important resources when it comes to SEO is Google’s Webmaster Tools (http://www.google.com/webmasters/).

The second most important tools are the trackers put out by the various web searches.  The three most important are Google Analytics, Bing and Yahoo.  The reason is that most of these tools help get your site searched by their search bots and they often provide you with website data about how people are finding and using your website.  This information can then be used to work on your SEO strategy.

The next step in a good SEO strategy will be to figure out your meta data, keywords and understanding what all of those terms mean.  I hope to share a bit with you each month about SEO and that it does not have to be a big scary mystery and that it really is something you can work on bit by bit!
